Kill Coffins, Go Green
Type: Infographic | Research | Iconography | Print | Interactive | Photography Shoot
Media: Illustrator | Photography
This poster shines light on the environmental impact traditional burials have on our environment and explores some green burial benefits and options. An infographic was the best approach to easily display the information. Wanting it to interact with the earth (opposed to being a wall piece), I cut out a shape of a coffin to symbolize the removal of this practice so plants can grow through and take its place.
Note: Looking at this project five years later, there are several things I would do differently. For starters, I would fix the typography choice, leading, and design inconsistencies. As for the context presented, I would provide a larger variety of green burial approaches—instead of it feeling like an ad for the Mushroom Suit. Most notably, there are instances in the text where I say “we should” switch to greener practices, while not recognizing the importance and culture involved with traditional burial practices. Some of my older environmental projects tend to have a more aggressive tone when it comes to sustainable actions—a tone I have learned to move away from. I do not want my tone to feel blameful, forceful, or demanding when it comes to the decisions everyday people can make. My goal now, is to raise awareness, present facts, and provide action items if viewers wish to take action.
With this being said, I’m leaving this on my website for now since it displays my interest in intertwining graphic design with organic matters and topics.
